A Season of Excitement!

AndreaIt's finally here!

The 2011-2012 season has arrived and it is filled with concerts that will arouse great memories, take you on a tour of the world and challenge the musicians to perform at their highest level. Live music in Indianapolis seems to get better with every season at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra!

Three concerts have me particularly excited! Urbanski Conducts Smetana, March 29-31, will be Bohemian perfection. I was fascinated to learn that Smetana composed most of this patriotic symphony after going deaf. Yet the richness of the sound and the clear tribute to his homeland are unmistakable. With Urbanski putting his own spin on a piece from his part of the world, the audience is sure to gain a new understanding and appreciation for this. Plus, acclaimed cellist Zuill Bailey will bring his flawless skills to Elgar's Cello Concerto.

Beethoven's "Eroica" and Joshua Bell, May 31 and June 1-2, will put romance in the air. Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony includes both the sweet strains of love and the powerful chords of passion. Internationally-acclaimed violin star Josh Bell will play Brahms' soft, romantic Violin Concerto. A home-grown Hoosier, Bell has toured the world and played for President Obama (twice!). The ISO is bringing him home to share his talents in the heartland. The concert will also include Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, a modern piece that will challenge the audience's perception of classical music as its haunting and discordant score pays tribute to the lives lost at Hiroshima. And, of course, Urbanski is conducting this concert, which makes the concert even more exciting!

In the Pops series, I'm thrilled about Rodgers and Hammerstein at the Movies, November 4-6. As a hopeless musical theater fan, this concert includes some of my all-time favorite tunes, including those from Oklahoma, The King and I and The Sound of Music. This music from Hollywood's Golden Age is fun, lively and emotive, and it brings back memories from my childhood! Scenes from these films will also be projected on a screen during the concert. It will be all I can do not to sing along during this performance!

Which shows in the 2011-2012 season are you most looking forward to?
