The ISO Gets Funky with Chris Brubeck and Time for Three

Symphonic Hits and Sound Off are back! This week we open our second season with one of the most exciting concerts yet including more symphonic hits and our resident ensemble, Time for Three (Tf3).  This season Sound Off (our pre-concert event held in the theater at 6:30 before the performance) also has a new host.  While I'm now in my third season as a staff conductor at the ISO, I'm thrilled to be joining Sound Off to bring you a behind-the-scenes look at our concerts. For my first Sound Off we have three special guests, composer Chris Brubeck, Nick Kendall of Tf3, and conductor James Gaffigan.  All three are really fun guys, so come check it out!

On the first half of this weekend's concert, the ISO gets funky with Tf3 and Chris Brubeck's concerto, Travels in Time for Three.  Chris Brubeck is the son of Jazz legend Dave Brubeck, and he incorporates jazz, gospel, funk, and a whole lot more into his music.  His recent orchestral compositions have created ground-breaking, genre-busting works which thrill audiences, and this concerto is no different.  Check out Chris' performance chops as he rocks with his band Triple Play.

Just like Chris, Tf3 takes many different styles and creates their own new brand of music.  If you haven't seen them before, check out what they're about here:

As you can see, the guys love what they do and are a lot of fun to be around.  I always enjoy the weeks they are with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as it gives everyone a great energy.  Don't forget that you can meet them for yourselves at the after party, Reverb, in the Hilbert Circle lobby directly after the concert.

I won't give away too much else about the concerto, you'll have to come to Sound Off to find out more, but I'll just say that the name of the concerto, Travels in Time for Three, is a reference to the many different styles Tf3 plays in during the concerto.  They go from Jazz to Baroque and back again, giving the effect that they are time traveling through musical styles.  From the Irish fiddling in the second movement to the Deep Bayou Funk Groove in the last, this should be a fun concert!

Also on the program is the "Symphonic Hit" of the week, Brahms' Symphony No. 4, and my personal favorite symphony.  Like most orchestral works, this symphony has been analyzed over and over by theorists and musicians, but when faced with a piece that has the depth, beauty, and emotional punch of Brahms 4, I think it is best to just sit back, and let it wash over you.  See how it speaks to YOU.  No other introduction is necessary!  If this is your first or your tenth Brahms 4, I'm sure it won't fail to be an intense and moving experience!

Tickets are still available and can be found here.
