Starting Off the New Year Right

Happy 2011 everyone!

Jessica Di SantoBefore we close the books on 2010, I have to mention a few proud moments of this past year.  One, another record-breaking year with Marsh Symphony on the Prairie; two, a sold out performance with the one, the only, Itzhak Perlman, violinist and conductor; three, fantastic guest artists in our Pops series including the Callaway sisters, Wayne Brady and Bugs Bunny (on the big screen, of course); and four, the smashing success of Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration--the 25th edition with Sandi Patty. We were overwhelmed with positive reviews and touching stories (many on this blog) about this cherished production.

And now, here we are in 2011 with a new offer to those who want to create their own perfect concert package.  Now through Jan. 17, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is offering a 3-for-2 saleIt's easy -- pick three concerts within the Classical/Coffee Classical Series, Pops/Coffee Pops Series and the Symphonic Hits Series and only pay the price of two!

Need a suggestion?  If you ask me, I'm a sucker for choral works, powerful symphonies and Broadway hits.  So, my best three would be:  Haydn's Creation on Feb. 18/19, Beethoven's Ninth on June 17/18 and Ashley Brown's Broadway on Feb. 11-13.

Need another suggestion?  Here's what ISO violist Amy Kniffen suggests:

Amy Kniffen - center"Any program that Jack Everly puts together will have all the facets of the best entertainment; it will be alternatingly witty, thought-provoking, hilarious and poignant.  For my three picks, I would pick anything of his plus Beethoven 7 because Beethoven is always effective in clearing away the grunge left from contemplating finances, politics, and traffic. Once the palate is clear his music never fails to move me and when it ends, I feel uplifted and able to face another day.  Dvorak offers a warm world of beautiful color, but I might have to pick Mendelssohn 4 because it is like a river of energy, just like our new Music Director, Krzysztof Urbanski, and I'm curious to see what the combination will bring."

I'll be posting more suggestions from our musicians in the coming days.  In the meantime, get shopping!
