Devouring Downtown - morsels and music

Devour Downtown

Indianapolis is in the midst of its wildly successful, biannual food extravaganza: otherwise known as Devour Downtown. From now until January 22, you can go to any participating Devour Downtown restaurant, choose from a special menu, and get one heck of a deal (2 for $30, in most cases).

But food isn't the only deal this time around. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is now in on the deal:  buy 2 tickets to Hello, Dolly! (second mezz) or Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (main floor) and get 'em for $30.

So, if you're taking advantage of this delicious deal, might I suggest the following options for a restaurant/concert pairing:

(1) Hello, Dolly! has very few seats left - so hurry!  And if you're one of the lucky ones to attend this world premiere performance featuring one of our local favorites, Sandi Patty, I'd recommend one of our favorite local restaurants: Dunaway's. The restaurant's homemade Manicotti and crab cakes would be my pick.

(2) For the ISO's performance of Mozart's 40th symphony (and commonly called one of his most admired works) on Jan. 20 and 21, I would suggest one of Indianapolis' most admired dishes: the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo's Steakhouse or its sister-restaurant, Harry & Izzy's. I promise, the zap from the horseradish sauce stings for just a second. Afterward, your sinuses will thank you.

(3) Also on the program for Jan. 20/21: the ISO plays Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 2, for the very first time in the Orchestra's 82-year history.  Seems like a good time to visit a new restaurant for the very first time, yes?  I'd recommend our next-door neighbor, The Libertine Restaurant and Liquor Bar.  The "chocolate ricotta pie in a jar" is enough to convince me that this little upscale place has the goods. And remember, The Libertine is a stone's throw from your seat at the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Devour away.
