It's
finally here!
The
2011-2012 season has arrived and it is filled with concerts
that will arouse great memories, take you on a tour of the world
and challenge the musicians to perform at their highest level. Live
music in Indianapolis seems to get better with every season at the
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra!
Three concerts have me particularly excited!
Urbanski Conducts Smetana, March 29-31, will be
Bohemian perfection. I was fascinated to learn that Smetana
composed most of this...

On
Feb. 27, Dan Kamin will bring side-splitting, family-friendly
comedy to Hilbert Circle Theatre--without saying a word. In a
performance of
"The Classical Clown" with the ISO and
conductor David Glover, Kamin will play a mischievous clown who
battles the conductor for control of the orchestra. His masterful
physical comedy is sure to delight everyone from toddlers to their
grandparents.
Kamin's comedy resume is impressive--he trained Johnny Depp and
Robert Downey, Jr. for their acclaimed...

Wow.
I cannot believe that I've been the communications intern at the
ISO for three
weeks now! It has been a great experience so far and I'm sure it
will only continue to get better.
To commemorate my first three weeks at the ISO, I'm sharing "Three
in Three," three things I've learned about the symphony in my first
three weeks--and three things that you should know, too!
1. The ISO's music is truly phenomenal.
I must ashamedly admit that I had never been to an
ISO performance before starting my...

This week on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's
Symphonic Hits series we're presenting three works by
the great Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak. I am also very excited
that we are recording the entire concert for later release on CD!
While all three works on the program have interesting
backgrounds, I thought that here on the blog we could get to
know Dvorak, the person, a little bit better. Many people know that
he lived for a short time in America, but I hope on the following
list you'll...

Today was a good day.
It has been said that the most challenging part of the classical
music business these days is trying to bring in new, excited people
to build the next generation of concert goers in order to help
sustain the future of our art form. And in a world of endless
entertainment choices just a mouse or remote control click away,
its no wonder that we have to work harder to make sure the beauty
and power of classical music is available to everyone that wants
it.
So I thought to...

During
every season at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, we have
orchestra members, soloists and conductors who push through a
concert despite a cold or a sore back, but this week our soloist,
IU South Bend's own Alexander Toradze
is playing after emergency surgery just three days
ago.
For 10 days, Mr. Toradze had been experiencing blurred vision
in his left eye. After a visit to his regular eye doctor, he was
referred to Dr. Thomas Hauch at South Bend Retina and Vitreous who
diagnosed him...

We received 49 blog entries for the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra's first Yuletide Celebration “Share Your
Favorite Yuletide Memory” contest! When the contest closed on
Friday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m., I admit, I dreaded picking the
winner.
These 49 submissions are heart-felt stories of family traditions,
holiday cheer, inspiration, humor, generosity, loss, hope, love and
musical memories. The contest had no parameters or criteria;
and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We chose the...

I realize the contest is over, which is fine, I just wanted to send
in my thanks to all the people who put on this fantastic show. I
attended my first Yuletide tonight, and it was spectacular! The
atmosphere from the moment you walk into the theatre is unlike
anything I've experienced at a concert before. It just feels like
Christmas and what a gorgeous tree! The "White Christmas" world
premiere, and Mike Runyan on the harmonica were definitely
highlights. Also seeing Sandi Patty host was great,...

I have only recently started going to Yuletide and this year I was
able to go the dress rehearsal. If there were any hiccups, I
certainly didn't notice. It was very entertaining and would
definitely recommend anyone getting a nice kick off to the holiday
season by attending Yuletide. I particularly enjoyed their
rendition of Silent Night and the addition of magic to the
show!

My family and I have attended the Yuletide Celebration quite a few
times over the years, and have loved each and every performance!
Our first time was when my son was 4 years old and could barely
stay in his seat with excitement. By the time we attended 2 years
ago, we had added our daughter and even the in-laws and various
friends. Having our picture taken by the tree, and buying hot cider
and beautiful (delicious!) Christmas cookies are required elements
of attendance! My fondest Yuletide...

A neighbor-friend somehow got free comp tickets to the show the
first year that we lived in Indy many years ago. I went with my
neighbor the first year and did not know what to expect. We had
such a great time that we decided to make it an annual outting for
the two of us. My friend has since moved away two years ago, but so
far she has always made a trip back to Indy so that she can go to
the Yuletide Celebration with me.

The season of 2000 Yuletide Celebration was the first time any of
my family had been to the Celebration but one we will never forget.
My daughter was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time (Sydney was born
December 18th) and from the beginning to the end of the show my
unborn grandchild loved the show. She moved and kicked to the beat
of the music thruout the show!!! It was amazing to see and feel my
daughters tummy jump and move-the baby loved the symphony and the
show! She quieted between acts and...

I don't have a memory yet but would love to go and make some. I
have wanted to go for as long as I can remember the show started
when I was five. I am now a stay at home mom and would love to take
my daughter she loves music. I have been to the symphony while I
was in school and loved it every time. My daughter loves music and
would like to start a new tradition . :)

I am sixteen years old and have gone to every Yuletide with my
aunt, mom, and sister since I was two years old, so it has sort of
become a family tradition. Every year I look forward to seeing who
is going to host Yuletide and what special performances they will
have. There have been some pretty amazing hosts and performances
over the years, from the classic tap dancing Santas and The Night
Before Christmas to once in a life time experiences like the
African Children’s Choir. As soon as you walk...

We were taking our places in the first few seats of Row N when an
argument ensued. As is customary for us, I had gone in first,
sitting in the seat next to “the stranger.” My teenage son Parker
had halted in the aisle, making way for his brother Mason to take
the seat beside me. Mason held back and waved Parker in ahead of
him. Parker refused. “I’m not sitting next to her,” he said,
looking at me with feigned disgust. “Oh, yes, you are,” Mason
stated emphatically. “No way,” Parker asserted. “I...

We never know what to get my Mother-In-Law for Christmas. I had
always heard wonderful things about the Yuletide. We have been
taking her to the show for 4 years, she has a difficult time
walking, but wants to sit close to the stage as she is 82 years
young. I usually get seats in the 4th or 5th row. Her walking has
become more and more difficult so this year I will have to get
seats in the so called handicap area. Last year the ushers helped
us get her up the steps for 30 minutes but they never...

I believe it was the year of 2005 when I saw my first Yuletide
show. I was 20 years old. (The same number of years as the Yuletide
Show! :) I attended the show with my boyfriend and his family. For
his family, the Yuletide show was a family tradition which included
buying Christmas cookies at intermission. Yum! It was an amazing
show! I will never forget the feeling of being in a Christmas
wonderland where beautiful chords along with incredible
orchestration created the "awh" with every piece....

In December 1997, I was halfway through my sophomore year at
Butler. I had just started taking harp lessons in January, and my
harp teacher, Diane Evans, was the principal harpist with ISO. She
knew how much I loved musicals and pops concerts, so she told me in
November that I absolutely must check out Yuletide at the Symphony.
I balked. First of all, tickets were almost $20 at the time, and as
a broke college student, that sounded ridiculous. I didn't know
anything about the show, and I wasn't...

Today is my 29th birthday and December 4 will be my 25th Yuletide
Celebration. As I have been receiving wonderful cards and calls
from friends all day, I have realized that my birthday memories
through the years have always been connected to the Yuletide
Celebration and want to take a moment to reflect on my favorite
memories through the years. We had recently moved to Indianapolis
when my dad saw the advertisement for a new type of Christmas show
taking place at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, The...
