magical evening out

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 by Everyone's a Critic
When our daughters we little, 5, 8,and 11 ( they are now 25, 28, and 31) my husband got tickets through his work and we went to our first Yuletide event. The girls and I got all dressed up and we "encouraged" him to as well. hehe. We drove downtown and we were just mesmerized by what we saw. The girls started asking the next year about the first of november are we going to the Yuletide daddy? So for many years that was our annual event for the holidays. The girls would love getting dressed up...Read More »

A WHOLE family event!

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 by Everyone's a Critic
My fondest memory of Yuletide is going as a whole family last year in 2009. My husband and I had gone to see the Yuletide show several years back and I cried most of the way through the show, thinking how I would love to be able to come back one day and bring the whole family. We have three boys and they all love music and dancing, but especially our youngest. The problem is that our youngest son has autism. Being in a public place with a lot of people and crowd noise is very troubling to him....Read More »

First Date

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 by Everyone's a Critic
I was totally bummed on that December day in 2000... An Indiana snow storm had cancelled my family's annual Christmas gathering in Eastern Illinois. You see, my family is scattered throughout the country, so we look forward to that day, all year long. I was sitting at home, feeling sorry for myself, when a friend, who I adored, called me up and said, "I'm coming to get you. We're going downtown to Yuletide!" He braved the storm in his SUV and we slowly made our way downtown. Once we arrived at...Read More »

My Mom's Last Yuletide Celebration

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 by Everyone's a Critic
My mother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 18, 1999. It was a horrific summer as she spent a month in the hospital. Was home, going to get blood/platelets every week. December of 1999, my grandmother, her mother passed away. Our family had gone through a lot of emotions. The week after my grandmother's funeral we planned to have an early Christmas. We decided to start off our Christmas Celebration Weekend by going to the Yuletide Celebration on a Friday nite. It was neat to...Read More »

Meet George Daugherty: The Creator of Bugs Bunny at the Symphony

Monday, November 8, 2010 by Jessica Di Santo

Jessica Di SantoMy 8 year-old still can't believe that cartoons were only shown on Saturday mornings "back in the day," as she calls "my era."  Yes, darling.  No 24-hour access to cartoons like digital cable, Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel provide us today (sometimes I wish we could go back to less programming). My brother and I had the same Saturday morning ritual: make some hot chocolate on the stove and turn on Bugs Bunny and his friends--Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, Daffy Duck and Yosemite Sam--and...

The ISO Gets Funky with Chris Brubeck and Time for Three

Thursday, October 14, 2010 by David Glover
Symphonic Hits and Sound Off are back! This week we open our second season with one of the most exciting concerts yet including more symphonic hits and our resident ensemble, Time for Three (Tf3).  This season Sound Off (our pre-concert event held in the theater at 6:30 before the performance) also has a new host.  While I'm now in my third season as a staff conductor at the ISO, I'm thrilled to be joining Sound Off to bring you a behind-the-scenes look at our concerts. For my first Sound Off we...Read More »

The Circle Theater made a smashing comeback and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra staged a new beginning last night in one of the biggest evenings in the cultural history of the Hoosier capital.  [Regarding Perlman's performance] Of course, [John] Nelson had an ace up his sleeve with Itzhak Perlman, who is definitely not...

Indiana Beach Gives Away Free Ticket for Circle the City Runners/Walkers!

Friday, July 16, 2010 by Jessica Di Santo

Intern Ben Luttrull is feeling the momentum now, as we near the home stretch for the planning of the Circle the City for the Symphony event on Aug. 7.

If my internship was with the Indianapolis 500, we would be at about lap 350 right now: over halfway through and time to start really focusing on pushing as hard as possible down the stretch.

Some exciting things are happening with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's Circle the City event presented by Finish Line on Aug. 7.  For example, our...

Ben's Internship Adventure

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 by Jessica Di Santo

Ben LuttrellISO Development intern Ben Luttrell gives us another glimpse into planning for the ISO's Circle the City for the Symphony event Aug. 7.

Between Conner Prairie trips, Circle the City for the Symphony duties, internship adventures and the dreaded “professional development," I’d say I’m having quite the summer so far at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The honeymoon of “Wow, I have my own phone line!” has faded into the “I’m expected to do real work” feeling, but I’m quite excited to report that...

Getting Competitive: Sign up for the team competition by July 23!

Friday, June 25, 2010 by Jessica Di Santo

Ben LuttrellBen Luttrell gives us his third installment of his thoughts about the ISO's Circle the City for the Symphony event. Perhaps I need to give him his own blogroll?

I was a team captain for Ball State University's Relay for Life this past April. The opportunity I had to work with the BSU chapter of PRSSA (the public relations group for students) was good, but the real pleasure for me came from the opportunity to tell people all about this wonderful event and the cause it supports. It wasn’t about me...

Running in a Circle

Tuesday, June 8, 2010 by Jessica Di Santo

Ben LuttrellBen Luttrull is an intern with the ISO this summer and is working on the Symphony's Circle the City for the Symphony event in August. I've turned my blog over to him to talk about this important fundraising event for the ISO.

When I first found out I was going to be an intern with the ISO this summer, I started mentally racing through what my first assignment was going to be. I’d like to say I was prepared for the 35,000-plus people at the Mini-Marathon Expo, but I had sadly focused on more...

Last chance to "Sound Off" this season!

Friday, April 30, 2010 by Sean Newhouse
Time flies when you’re having fun, and so we’ve come to the last Symphonic Hits series performances of the ISO season – which also means our last Sound Off preconcert events of the season (hosted by yours truly, as usual).  Friday and Saturday’s performances are led by guest conductor Jun Märkl, and feature Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 along with two virtuosic works for piano and orchestra:  Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Saint-Säens’ Africa, with piano soloist Marc-André Hamelin.  I’ll be hosting...Read More »

Springing Forward

Monday, April 12, 2010 by Brian Smith
Now that the calendar has turned to April and the gray, cold days of winter are gone for a while, signs of brighter days are appearing everywhere.  Winter coats hung in the closet, new buds on trees, and enjoying the great outdoors are all signs of the rejuvenation that comes with spring.

Maybe the weather had something to do with the renewed sense of energy on stage at the theater this past weekend. After a well deserved week of vacation, the orchestra welcomed Mark Wigglesworth back the podium...Read More »

The loss of a Master musician and our Pink Floyd Concert

Friday, March 19, 2010 by Paul Berns

Hi All:

Just returned home from a sold out Pink Floyd Tribute Band concert with the ISO.  The light show was dazzling.  And I believe the ISO received at least three standing ovations from the appreciative (of ALL) ages audience. Possibly you were there and will comment.

I loved the outfits worn by our audience.  Walking in from the convenient parking garage I saw a couple that looked like they were dressed for a prom while many others were in jeans. One can always be comfortable at the Hilbert...

Memories in the Making

Saturday, March 6, 2010 by Brian Smith
Over the past few days a group of very talented young people could be seen milling about the backstage area of the Hilbert Circle Theater.  As they waited, many could be seen playing with cell phones or chatting with friends.  Things you might expect a group of teenagers to be doing to kill some time.  A passerby might see this gaggle of young men and women and think nothing was out of sorts, save the formal attire they were wearing.  But these people were far from your normal mall loitering...Read More »

Sound Off at a Special Time!

Sunday, February 28, 2010 by Sean Newhouse
This coming Friday and Saturday, I’ll be hosting our preconcert event Sound Off at a special time – 6:00pm.  This is because the Honor Orchestra of America will be performing at 7:00pm, before the ISO hits the stage at 8:00pm, for this week’s performances in the Symphonic Hits series.  We invite you to make a full evening of it at the Hilbert Circle Theater with Sound Off and the two performances!

The ISO performance will feature wonderful staples of the repertoire, with guest conductor James... Read More »

It's THEATER people!

Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Everyone's a Critic
Phones buzzing, people viewing their screens, or getting up from a performance are all distractions. The audience is made up of people who paid to witness a performance. Unless you're on stage, leave the devices at home or off. And I mean "OFF" off, as in totally inoperational. If a group wishes to have some interactive terminals or solicit cell contributions after the show that's fine with me. Otherwise, kindly don't interrupt my entertainment experience. We can all wait until we get home to...Read More »

Sound Off is back!

Sunday, January 3, 2010 by Sean Newhouse

Happy New Year, everyone – I hope 2010 is off to a terrific start for all of you!

This coming Friday and Saturday, the 8th and 9th, the ISO’s series of popular classics, Symphonic Hits powered by Lilly, returns to the Hilbert Circle Theater stage, and of course, that also means the return of Sound Off, the preconcert event that I host one hour prior to each concert (AKA 6:30pm).

This week’s concert program is full of spectacular music, including a suite of excerpts from my favorite work by...

67,426!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 by Sean Newhouse
That's the number of people in the audience the ISO and I played for on Sunday night when we performed the Star-Spangled Banner at the Colts-Patriots game at Lucas Oil Stadium - equivalent to almost 38 times the capacity of the Hilbert Circle Theater!  I'm guessing that it was the largest audience the ISO has ever played for, and it was definitely record attendance for Lucas Oil Stadium (they announced that later, during the game).

It was a pretty surreal experience all the way around - before...Read More »

"Just imagine them all naked!"

Sunday, November 15, 2009 by Sean Newhouse

That was the advice given to me by a friend upon hearing that I would be conducting in front of a live audience of 63,000 people tonight.  Another friend of mine (this one is also a conductor) joked “Don’t screw it up, or your career will be over.”  The ISO and I are hitting the road tonight to perform in what is for us a pretty unusual (but exciting!) venue – Lucas Oil Stadium, about a mile away from our home at the Hilbert Circle Theater.  We’ll be playing the national anthem before...
