Indy Loves Lang Lang!

Although it is nearing my bedtime (significantly earlier since I shifted gears from being a college student to a "working girl"), I feel compelled to quickly blog about tonight's incredible Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert.

While I have been blown away by every ISO concert this season, tonight's was particularly spectacular. Not only did I relish every moment of Beethoven 7 (see my previous blog post for my musings on this underrated symphony), but more importantly, Lang Lang's performance of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto elicited the most intense audience reaction I have encountered at Hilbert Circle Theatre.

From his first notes, Lang Lang engaged the audience with his dynamic contrasts, flawless finger technique and endearing enthusiasm for the music. He followed his virtuosic display in the first movement with a passionate but simultaneously soothing rendering of the second movement. He most delighted audiences, I believe, with his lighthearted and upbeat presentation of the third movement. His encore - Liszt's "La Campanella" - gave the audience a sense of the full range of his exceptional skill.

Although Lang Lang's performance was electrifying, I was most excited by the audience's response. As soon as Lang Lang pounded out his last, grandiose Beethovenian chords, hoots, hollers and "Bravos!" erupted throughout the hall as concert attendees leapt to their feet. As I ambled into the lobby for intermission, I heard several fellow orchestra-goers gushing about the performance and recounting their favorite moments. I smiled, pondering the thrilling feeling of applauding for an amazing classical artist with hundreds of others who shared the experience.

At the risk of the late hour turning my writing into strings of cliche sentiments, I will refrain from sharing any further meditations on the power of music or the influence of artists. I will, however, conclude by relating how glad I am that over 1,000 can still be brought to their feet by a little Beethoven. Thank you, Lang Lang!
